Escapes | Yawn goes to Texas

We’ve fallen in love with Austin. A city with a happy vibe. Having explored it ourselves, we wanted to share our top tips for a day here. If you have the chance to visit, take it!

Morning Activity:

Kayaking in Zilker Park - After a slow start, avoid the intense heat of the afternoons and have a mid morning paddle. Rent a kayak and float at a leisurely pace down the Colorado river.

If you aren’t up for being on the water then walk along the many trails. The river walks are amazing. Lady Bird Lake is a favourite spot already. Kids sit along the side of the water and swing themselves in on ropes. Lots of laughter to be had.

Late lunch - Once you have dried off, wander downtown and on the way enjoy a healthy lunch at Flower Child. A delicious menu with all sorts of salads and refreshing iced teas.

Afternoon:

Explore the streets - Take a walk down 2nd street. Hip boutiques, colourful wall murals and local landmarks make this a lovely wander. It will also help you understand the city ethos - “Keep Austin weird”. Pop into the inspiring Austin city library on the way.

Dinner at home with food from the very first Whole Foods - If you are self-catering (as we are through Airbnb) then stock up on groceries at the very first Whole Foods in central Austin. A huge and inspiring store full of local produce.

Evening:

Two step with strangers - Austin is the live music capital of the world. To miss out on one of their amazing music venues would be remiss. My husband’s colleagues have recommended the legendary Broken Spoke. Two stepping with Texan strangers – I can hardly wait.

“If all the Honky-Tonks were like this one when I played them, then I would never have left.” - Garth Brooks at the Broken Spoke, Austin, 2017

We agree. It’s going to be hard to leave Austin.
